How to Increase Computer Speed - Tips and Tricks

Find out how to increase computer speed and maintain your computer as efficiently as possible, as the day you first started it up. Many people assume that viruses, spyware and malware are the only reason a computer's performance has slowed down. Other factors causing a computer to perform poorly are too many programs that are running at the same time. Not enough physical memory is another reason for poor computer performance.

Below I will describe some of the common cause for a computer to run not as fast as you want it to run.

Step 1) Remove Old or Unused programs and files. If you have old documents, video or picture files that are not used any more, and you want to keep them then copy then to an external drive or to a DVD. Else delete then from your hard drive.

Step 2) You should defragment your hard drive regularly. The defragment program copies each file so that it occupies neighboring blocks. When you read that file, your computer can read it in a single read operation instead of running all over your hard drive read bits and pieces here and there.

This will most definitely speed up your computer. To access the Defragment Tool, click on your "Start bottom" -> "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools". It is best to start the Defragment when you are not going to use your computer.

If your computer has never been defragmented, this step can take a long time to complete.

Step 3) Uninstall old or unused applications. This will free up disk space, can speed up your boot up times as well, and free memory as well for the programs that you want to run.

Step 4) A very useful Windows utility is the Disk Cleanup utility. It can be accessed from your Start Menu, then "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", and select "Disk Cleanup"

The Disk Cleanup utility will scan your computer's hard drive and delete the following files:

    * Temporary operating System files
    * Temporary internet files
    * Temporary program files
    * Downloaded program files

Step 6) Run a check on your computer Registry. The Windows registry is the database that holds your computers information. With time the registry gets corrupted with missing entries to files and other components and may even have been infected by a virus. Most of the computer problems slow down problems can be attributed to the Windows registry.

Run a registry cleaner regularly to keep your computer running as fast as possible. To fix your computers registry errors you need to down load a free registry scan program.
